Hydro-wellness Hub project wins MCCT award

The 2024 winner was Chloe Nowell for their project to provide a Hydro-wellness Hub and paediatric Neuro Wellbeing Centre in Middlesbrough.

Chloe's project will provide housing and care for the children and accommodation for their families. The aim is to improve the quality of life for both the patients and their families, providing treatments to help reduce the physical and emotional impacts of their illnesses.

By improving their quality of life and providing a space they want to be in, the stressful side effects of living on hospital wards will be outweighed. Its proximity to Middlesbrough College makes the riverfront location ideal, facilitating rehabilitation and reintegration into schools and society. The hub aims to enhance neuro-rehabilitative care beyond current NHS provisions.

The project utilises the unused Bolckow and Vaughan's Ironworks locomotive shed beside the River Tees. By merging old and new architectural elements and addressing the site's flood risks, the design ensures adaptability and resilience to the future.
